Holiday makers in England partied hard this summer, as a new Government funded survey reveals average consumption of alcohol totaled eight drinks a day.

The report was carried out by the Know Your Limits Campaign where 3,500 people were surveyed, revealing that people consumed 80 alcoholic drinks  in total on an average 10 day break.

This amount roughly translates as 80 pints of beer (227 units of alcohol) or 80 large glasses of wine (240 units).

Current NHS guidelines suggest women consume no more than two to three units a day, while men should not exceed three to four units daily.

Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware, said, “Holidays are often a time to have fun in the sun but forgetting about alcohol guidelines can play havoc with our health and wellbeing.

“Aside from feeling hungover, the short-term consequences of over-indulging include dehydration, low mood and weight gain, as well as ending up in potentially risky situations.

“Whether on holiday or back at home, habitually drinking more than is recommended can also lead to major health conditions like liver disease and cancer.”

Public health minister, Gillian Merron, said, “It’s all too easy to slip into the habit of drinking too much on holiday.

“And it’s always hard to get back into a normal routine. But we should try to use September as the new January and make a pledge to be a little more healthy.”

So maybe it’s time to lay off the booze so much on holiday don’t you think? I know many people associate holidays with getting drunk, but hey - you can do that back home anytime can’t you? Why not take at least one or maybe two days out of your holiday as complete alcohol-free days - time to kick back and relax by the pool - with a non-alcoholic cocktail to keep you well hydrated of course. Or here’s a novel idea - go and do some sightseeing - investigate this new and undiscovered land minus the alcohol - or the liquid lunch.

Good luck!
