British scientists have voiced concerns over “dangerous maverick” doctor, Greeta Shroff who claims to be able to treat incurable conditions from renal failure to cerebral palsy.

The Indian doctor claims to produce and purify stem cells from human embryos and use them on her patients – who include Perry Cross, a 33 year-old Australian campaigner for stem cell research.

Mr Cross became a quadriplegic after a rugby injury at the age of 19. He has no movement below the neck and is forced to use a ventilator to breathe. He says he has been helped by the doctor and can now breathe without the need for a ventilator.

“After 14 years of no change at all since my accident, I can now breathe on my own,” he said in an interview.

Stephen Minger, director of the stem-cell biology laboratory at Kings College London, said he believed Dr Shroff’s techniques were not safe. “She’s published nothing in terms of what she is doing,” he said. “She’s produced no data whatsoever in terms of what cells she is using, or how they are prepared or injected.”

With much tighter controls in Australia, the US and Britain, patients from all over the world have been flying to India to see the doctor.

Mr Cross is glad he made the decision to seek treatment from Dr Shroff. “I couldn’t breathe on my own, I still can’t bathe on my own. I can’t swim or get wet. The list of things I can’t do are a mile long. Why wouldn’t I try everything?” he said.
